In India, Steinhoff has a joint venture in the family-owned Alam Tannery and Alstein, capitalising on the availability of inexpensive raw material and skilled labour which make this region such an attractive investment opportunity.
Alam Tannery is a leather-manufacturing operation producing cut-and-sewn upholstery furniture covers from a new tannery in the Kolkata leather complex. Fully operational in January 2007, this tannery is the largest of its kind in India.
Steinhoff also has a cut-and-sewn upholstery facility and design centre, producing up to 12 000 units per month, as well as an apparel factory producing small leather items. A new lounge suite manufacturing facility is expected to produce 150 units per day.
The current output from production facilities in India is exported to Steinhoff factories in eastern Europe and the United Kingdom for use in upholstered products sold into Germany and UK markets.
